We have three lilacs in our yard. I've moved them around several times and will probably continue to do so until I find the right spot for them. I currently have two up front. One is a pinkish and one dark purple. We have one out back and it is a purple. They are all blooming right now. The pinkish one looks a little anemic, though it has a lot of flowers on it. The dark purple one has very few flowers and doesn't look too happy either. By far, the best one this year is the purple on out back.
My mother in law sent it to us as a gift back in 2009. It came from Christine's Lilacs, in Winthrop, Maine. It has large impressive fragrant flowers. The plant is still only about 42 inches tall so it should be very impressive once it gets to a more full height. I went online to see what it would take to order others from Christine's Lilacs but her website is now down. I think I'll try and call one of the numbers tomorrow and see if they are still around. It would be too bad if they went out of business because they obviously have some very nice lilac varieties.

What variety is that?! We have that same lilac (left over from the previous owner) and I've been trying to figure out what variety it is for a while now. Ours is over 30 years old and was being crowded out by some pines so we transplanted it and have been trimming it a little each year to fix it's lopsidedness. It's got a lot of new branches and kept blooming even through the stress of the transplant.
I love lilacs. They have such a beautiful scent and signals spring in my mind. Your's are a bit ahead of ours as I haven't seen any blooms up here just yet. Betcha it will be soon now.
We are also interested to know the variety! We sell over 25 different types. Love your photos! Not blooming in NY yet! Make sure they get full sun :)
www.lilacfarmusa.com we are getting photos up as quick as possible
Thank you so much for such a nice comment, this is Christine from Christine's Lilacs in Winthrop, Maine. The lilac you are talking about is the Nadezhda. We had a couple of rough years due to the ecomony but this year we are back up and running! I will be recreating my website next spring (2013) Thanks again, Christine
Christine, That is great news that you are up and running again. I will certainly be in touch once I get my back yard beds dug up again. I hope others take notice as well and are able to enjoy your great plants.
I love lilacs. Their smell is so wonderful when in full bloom.
