The First Project (Re-written on 4.17)

The first project we are likely to undertake at the home will be renovation of the basement. The intent is to create an oasis from all of the construction that will be going on upstairs.

The current basement is finished but otherwise a blank slate. It has a terrible drop ceiling and existing carpet that both must go. It has a bathroom with a shower that also needs a little cleaning up. Our intent is to make a family room with a bar, an office, and a play area for Sophie.

As an architect, I am pretty excited. In many of the other rooms in the home, what we will do will mostly be dictated by the existing architecture. This is one of the few places in the house where we can do whatever we want. I hope to do a well-crafted interior as a way to keep with the theme of the rooms on the main floors. With a little creativity, and by using both recycled and natural materials, I think we can end up with something unique.

I will continue to update this as the design progresses.

Sand! wall to wall sand, I'm thinking real beach scene down here. I know a good sand guy, we'll get at cost.

Chris, we were actually hoping you could tell us how to finish our basement!

I say go for an authentic pub/brewery in yours!

A pub/brewery sounds great. OP is a "dry" town - I wonder what their stance is on homebrewing. I should have looked into that one prior to putting in an offer on a house there.
