Second Coat of Stain

I did a second coat of stain on the woodwork this morning.  I used only the Red Mahogany for this second coat.  I m really happy and think I am going to stop here with the color and darkness.  It is pretty darn close to what I wanted so I'd rather not fool with it anymore.  I should be done with the living room cleaning and staining and started the final finish by tomorrow night.
As a comparison, the above pic is from this morning, with the second coat and the bottom pic is from yesterday, with only one coat.

Staining in the main rooms

I finished enough of the cleaning of the trim in the living room where I could start staining.  I taped off some areas and put down drop cloths but still made a total mess.  I painted the stain on with a sponge brush and then let it sit for about 5 minutes and then wiped it down.
I am mixing two colors to get an approximation of what was initially there.  After one coat, I am going to do a second and may go heavier on the red mahogany in the second round.
I think that the extra time cleaning was worth it.  I probably should have spent even more time but I am just not sure how many times I can go over a single piece of wood without going insane.  I knew that the PO did a shitty job stripping the wood but I never realized how much dirt and paint and other crap was on the wood.  The difference between the cleaned and finished wood in the living room and the untreated wood in the dining room is remarkable.

I've set a schedule to try and complete a good portion of this for the holidays.  I'll now alternate between cleaning, staining and applying the final finish to areas until I am done.  I hope to start painting in the living room next week.  We are hosting Thanksgiving Dinner at our house and it would be nice if folks didn't have to eat in a construction zone.

When you take a 2 and a 1/2 year old to Lowe's

I had to pick up some more supplies for my ongoing work on the bedroom. I decided to get my daughter, Sophie, out of my wife’s hair for a little while so I brought her with me to Lowe’s. We browsed through the aisles, looking at picture rail, stains; I had to pick up some more rags and gloves. While rounding the corner of the paint aisle, something caught my daughter’s eye: the children’s room decorating section. She screamed, “Dora, Dora”.

Against my better judgment, I decided to guide the cart over to that area of the store and figured it wouldn’t hurt to take a look at some of the things they had. My daughter went absolutely crazy, as if she had found some magical world where all of her favorite cartoon characters existed at once, together. I gave in to her please and we picked out some stickers of Dora for her to put up in her room she also wanted wallpaper, border, a nightlight, and a million other things that I did not want to be party to.

The stickers supposedly come off the wall without leaving any marks. We had a fun time putting them up (though I think if Sophie had her way, she would have put them in one tight cluster above the door).

In addition to this small excursion, I took down the crown molding/picture rail. Instead of trying to salvage it, I bought new and my friend, Pete helped me stain it to be put up in its proper location. Taking down the molding did not cause too much damage though I will have a little work to do in the plaster repair department. The wood is coming along nicely but the process is very slow.

Growing tired of the bedroom, I decided to re-visit the basement and to try and actually finish that room. I replaced the curved soffit with a straight one and finished up the trim work in that room. All I have left is to finish the lattice on the soffit and the basement is officially done. Kind of scary – since this was the first project I started when we moved in. The lanterns in the basement are additions by Sophie; celebrating Chinese New Year a month and a half too late.

Progress on the Bedroom

We’re slowly making progress on the bedroom. I have finished stripping one entire wall, wood and plaster. I started staining the wood on that wall with a gel stain and will eventually start applying a wipe-on finish. While I let coats dry, I am working my way around the room with more stripping. I made an odd discovery while working on the “crown molding” in the room. It appears that this molding is not crown molding at all but is instead picture rail. Judging from the number of newer nails and the way it is hung, I am guessing that this is the original picture rail and instead of being thrown away, it was moved from the picture-rail location up to the crown molding location. I guess this presents a minor dilemma. I was going to buy new picture rail and keep the upper molding where it is. Now that I have made this discovery, I am debating removing the crown molding and re-installing it at the picture-rail level and not having a crown molding in the room. This is how our living room is and might be an option - but it seems like a lot of effort. Hmmm.
We have chosen a color scheme for the room. My wife and I both agree on two colors. This is ground-breaking as I typically do the color choosing and Ileana rarely agrees with me - until she sees the results. I am colored blind but somehow have a knack for picking the right colors. For an example of how my wife’s color-choosing techniques are, you only need to go back to our basement painting and re-painting incident. Either way, we have chosen “Marsh Grass” for the walls and "Vermeer" for the area above the picture rail. I think we'll continue with the Oklahoma Wheat for our ceilings as we did in our daughter's room. With the Green & Green bed, the room seems to be taking on an "Asian" theme. We had hoped to get some photos from our trip to China blown-up and framed nicely for the room. Oddly enough, the colors we chose for the room seem to match perfectly with the colors from misty Mount Lushan.
