Either the League of Women Voters needs to rethink their decorated rain barrel fundraiser / publicity piece or the OP needs to invest in a few more trash receptacles for Lake Street. FYI, this is right in front of one of the finest buildings in the world and one of the most visited landmarks in the OP. Nice touch. The up-sides: At least people were trying not to litter or perhaps we have yet another re-use option for plastic food containers (or old rain barrels)?

I noticed this a few weeks ago with another rain barrel as well. I was a little annoyed to see people putting their gum wrappers and stuff in the rain barrels. But you might be right, maybe we do need more trash cans!
we've got plenty trash cans, I think that most people don't understand the rain barrels or maybe think that our little village is trying to be even cleaner . . . what I don't get is how they miss that fact that there is a top on these things, with a screen no less???
that's ridiculous. maybe most people don't know what rain barrels are. and, seriously, it's lidded. wouldn't this deter people? at least they didn't put it in the street, i guess. is this at unity temple, btw?
Yep, right in front of Unity.
That's kind of funny when you think about it. On the plus side, looks like a good teaching moment. You people in OP are doing a great job with the rain barrel promoting.
