I love working in the yard this time of year. I don't know if it is the smells in the air, the cool weather or just the dark look of all of the dried plants. Unfortunately, I have been preoccupied with work on the inside so I haven't done my ritual fall "plant moving". Most of the plants have died and gone to seed but the pansies that I put in about a month ago give a nice splash of color to the garden.
I purchased a bunch of bulbs last month. I used to live on a brick-paved street near the University in Buffalo where most of the yards were covered with crocuses in the spring. It was always a dramatic sight and I always thought it would be a cool thing to try and do the same thing at my home some day. I about 150 crocus and squill bulbs scattered around the lawn this morning. We'll see if we have any success with anything growing come spring.
I also put in about 40 cloves of garlic in the garden. It never seems like we plant enough but unless I was going to give the garden completely over to garlic, which isn't the worst idea in the world, I will have to make due with the limited number of heads we get each year.

I just threw some hyacinth, tulip and Fritillaria imperialis bulbs into the ground the day before Thanksgiving. I have visions of a beautifully lined spring sidewalk, but like you said . . . the squirrels may have other plans.
I hope the squirrels don't eat all those bulbs. I've had no luck with crocuses here in Beverly, but not due to squirrels.
I planted them in our first year here and was really looking forward to them in the spring. They came up as expected. When each one reached the point where it was ready to bloom the next day, I'd come out in the morning and find that it had been munched down to the ground. Damned rabbits!
Never planted crocuses again. However, I've had very good luck with hyacinth, grape hyacinth, scilla, daffodil, and ipheion. The rabbits may nibble on some of them a little bit, but they don't annihilate them.
