It realy is the little things...

It has been raining for days, or so it seems. We have been spared the basement floods so far but the yard is looking a little scary. I went out this evening to check things out and see if the wetness and warmth has gotten anything going.

I looked around the front yard and was immediately struck by a small splash of color. Is that a candy wrapper? One of the annoying things about living on a busy street is that this is a common find. To my surprise, it was the crocuses coming up. I guess I'll have a busy weekend getting the garden ready and maybe even starting some seeds.

I got the same pleasant surprise (though not crocuses) along our house in the backyard when I went to check the catch basin this morning, and noticed the daffodil shoots poking their way up...similar to this shot from last year (albeit with less sun and much shorter):

Those are so pretty! I've had the beginnings of a few tulips and daylilies pop up, and every time I walk by them, I tell them to get back in the ground. I hope their beauty doesn't get zapped when the temps inevitably dip back down. Hasn't it been wonderfully warm lately?

I am less concerned about the weather, though it is cold, than I am about the bunnies that seem to feed on these the minute they begin to open. It's an ongoing war.

Just when winter has almost killed your will to live....those darn flowers start popping up. Same thing happened to me last year w/ my daffodils. I'm afraid we are running a few weeks behind you weatherwise...if you already are seeing flowers.

Much better than the alternatives - the candy wrapper or worse - SNOW

I can relate to the bunny problem in a big way. I can't even plant crocuses. They reach the point where yours are in the picture, just about to bloom. When I come out the next day, looking for flowers, they've been eaten to the ground - every single time.

Bunnies don't eat daffodils. :)

Sad to report that the bunnies got the crocuses. The tulips and dafodils are also starting to peek through but no flowers buds yet. I am sure I'll post more photos later in the spring when they start to show.

What seeds will you be starting this year? I have some extras if you're interested in eggplant or thyme.

I wish it were just candy wrappers in my yard. Typically it's beer cans and bottles. fun thing for Lauren to be finding.
