Lilacs

We have three lilacs in our yard.  I've moved them around several times and will probably continue to do so until I find the right spot for them.  I currently have two up front.  One is a pinkish and one dark purple.  We have one out back and it is a purple.  They are all blooming right now.  The pinkish one looks a little anemic, though it has a lot of flowers on it.  The dark purple one has very few flowers and doesn't look too happy either.  By far, the best one this year is the purple on out back.

My mother in law sent it to us as a gift back in 2009.  It came from Christine's Lilacs, in Winthrop, Maine.  It has large impressive fragrant flowers.  The plant is still only about 42 inches tall so it should be very impressive once it gets to a more full height.  I went online to see what it would take to order others from Christine's Lilacs but her website is now down.  I think I'll try and call one of the numbers tomorrow and see if they are still around.  It would be too bad if they went out of business because they obviously have some very nice lilac varieties. 

A Great Surprise

When I got home today, there was a Fed Ex package on the front porch with my name on it. I was a little puzzled as I wasn't expecting anything. I opened it up and inside was an early birthday gift from my mother in law. It was a lilac from a place in Maine. Anyone that knows me knows that I am not easy to buy for. I am predictable in that I like my home and garden, beer, jazz, old LPs, etc. The fact that I like a very particular series of things within these realms is what makes it tough.

The lilac is just perfect, thanks Mom! I decided to put it up front on the opposite side of the yard as our dark purple lilac. This one says it is supposed to be reddish pink. I think it will be a great addition to the garden.Another discovery while I was photographing the lilac in the garden was this. Anyone know what it is? It has these small yellowish football shaped flowers and looks pretty cool. I'd love to get it to propagate if I could but this is the only one I have right now.
