Hoppy times in the back yard

It's been a while since I posted anything about the yard.  The reason is that not much is happening there since I have been preoccupied with the basement and all.  One nice thing that is going on is the hops that have grown over the pergola.  I hope they have no problem coming back next year because I like the look and am still holding out hope that one day I can make a batch of brew with them.

Also, I don't think I mentioned but I added another line of slats to the pergola.  It seemed a bit too open and I  like the new look of it.  I still hope to tackle de-uglying the garage this year and then doing a better blog entry on the pergola construction.

The Hop vine will do well and will return yearly. Ours are very full now and climb 16-20 feet yearly.

Hi Chris, I'm dreaming of summer and sitting under our pergola...I remembered you planted hops and am thinking of doing it here to climb up the side of ours. How are they doing? Would you recommend them? Do they attract annoying insects? Thanks!

Denise, our grew very well, almost too well. They took over the pergola and the root system ruined the patio so I dug them out. I loved them though and would recommend them if you don't mind them taking over. We now have a wisteria. If you look for that tag, you can see it in a few posts.

Thanks, I'll check out the wisteria. Don't really want to deal with out-of-control plants again--we had enough of that with our Smooth Sumac trees. :)
